Menorca

On May 6, we leave Porto Colom fully loaded with food and gasoil but still without water, as the one we could get from the harbor isn’t not potable. We save water as much as possible until the next opportunity to refill our tanks. The sea water is so clear that we don’t mind washing the dishes with it and we got use to the salty taste of the first sip of our morning coffee. We go back to Cala Arsenau to spend the night but the wind is weak and on the nose so we give up and cover these 4M with the motor. The next day, we take off at 10:30am for the north-east of the island, the wind is just right S-SE force 3-4. Nice sailing under the shinning sun [18,5NM]. We drop the anchor in Cala Molto at about half past two next to a Swedish family on a small boat very low on water.
Right after breakfast, the next day we leave for Menorca. The wind is ok at first and we move on a honorable speed but the last 10NM are painful, we are very close to the wind and the sea becomes messy especially as we get closer to the coast and the cliffs are echoing the swell. On this stretch of coast there are not many sheltered calas from SE swell, the one (Macarella) we were aiming for is agitated.
We end up in Cala Santa Galdana 1M further east, a little bit better sheltered but disfigured by high touristic buildings and buoyed off for swimmer so far from the beach we are almost excluded outside. We drop the anchor at the end of the day after 27,8NM covered. Sleepless rolly night, we get up in a bad mood. We give it another try and sail to Macarella again but it’s still as agitated as yesterday. We set our course for the bay of Ciutadella, the former capital city of the island.
We anchor in the Cala Degollador, about 500m from the historic center, it’s a good alternative to the usually crowed marina, it’s free and well sheltered.
Quasar (Fabien et Marjo) and Feng-shui (Al et Sonja) made it to Sardinia, it’s gonna be hard to meet them again now but who knows…
